Karen Aldridge-Eason receives Governance Award from Genesys

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Karen Aldridge-Eason, a member of the Genesys Health System Board of Trustees and former board chair, was awarded the Thomas A. Gleason Governance Award for her significant contributions to furthering Genesys’ mission of creating hope through healing in the Genesee County community.
The Genesys Board of Trustees honors board members (current and past) with the governance award for demonstrating a commitment to the Genesys Mission and Values through many years of leadership service to the organization and a strong commitment to its future growth.

"I believe very strongly in the Mission of Genesys – to help improve the health and wellbeing of this community physically and spiritually," Aldridge-Eason says. "This is something I have worked for my entire life.”

Aldridge-Eason has served as a member of the Genesys Board of Trustees since March 2002. In July 2008, she was appointed board chair and served in that role until June 2013. She remains an active member of the full board and continues to serve on three of its committees: Advocacy, Executive and Governance.

During the four years Aldridge-Eason chaired the Genesys governing board, the external environment, especially in health care, changed dramatically. Through these challenging times, she championed advancing VisionScape (Genesys’ long-term operating vision) including transformation of the care delivery to population health management, community engagement and revitalization, repositioning Genesys’ presence in downtown Flint, and increasing associate engagement through adoption of lean and high reliability principles.

Under Aldridge-Eason’s leadership, Genesys was recognized nationally with a comprehensive two-part case study by The Governance Institute, which highlighted governance best practices that have been developed and utilized at Genesys.

In the Flint community, she was budget director for the city from 1988 to 1992, after which she returned to her previous position with the Michigan Department of Management and Budget as director of the Office of Health and Human Services. In 1994, she joined the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, headquartered in Flint.

In 2003, Aldridge-Eason was named Foundation Liaison within the Executive Office of the Governor, a newly created cabinet level position. The Office of Foundation Liaison is the state's first formal philanthropic partnership. Its purpose is to invest in initiatives designed to help increase Michigan's economic competitiveness through reforms in education and healthcare, workforce development, and use of land resources.

Through the years, she has served on several local, state and national boards and committees, and has been recognized for her work locally and nationally.

In addition to receiving the Thomas A. Gleason Governance Award, Aldridge-Eason has received awards for outstanding service to the State of Michigan, the City of Flint, and her service in the mission field.

The Thomas A. Gleason, for whom this award was named, served on the Genesys Board of Trustees for 25 years and was a prominent community leader and businessman.
