Genesys Athletic Club hosts leadership mentoring day; athletes from nine area high schools will participate

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesys Athletic Club has partnered with the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame to sponsor Leadership Mentoring, a half day workshop for area high school athletes who want to improve their leadership skills as an athlete, in the classroom and as a future community leader.
The first workshop takes place Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8:30 am to noon at Genesys Athletic Club in Grand Blanc Township.

Athletes from Genesee County area schools were extended an invitation to participate. About 90 student athletes from nine schools were selected by their schools to attend.

The schools are: Carman-Ainsworth, Davison, Dryden, Fenton, Holly, Lapeer West, Linden, Powers Catholic and Swartz Creek. Students (male and female) represent a variety of sports.

"Our goal is to teach these student athletes about leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field so they can take these skills and adapt them as they enter the business community," reports Jay Berry, general manager of the Genesys Athletic Club who developed the concept and worked with Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame recipients to define the workshop curriculum.

"The Leadership Mentoring program is about teaching leadership skills on the field, in the classroom, and in the community, and the best role models and mentors are our own Hall of Fame inductees who have become community leaders," Berry points out.

"We are providing these students with leadership training and mentoring tools they can use as our future leaders. We refer to it as the 'complete athlete'."

Genesys Athletic Club tapped the resources of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame to build the mentorship component of the program.

The day's schedule includes the following:

Steve Schmidt, Mott Community College basketball coach and Hall of Fame inductee: keynote speaker

Joseph (Joey) Trosko, a 15 year-old baseball, football and basketball player at Powers Catholic High School: student to student message

A lecture on nutrition for athletes

A complete athlete warm-up

SPEED drills (speed, agility and power)

Yoga cool down

Tim Wakeham, Michigan State University head strength and conditioning coach for Olympic sports: talk on the importance of personal ethics, sportsmanship and leadership responsibilities that extend beyond athletics

Mentor meetings: students will meet in small groups with three Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame inductees:

Roy Hall: (2009 inductee) Davison High School graduate and two-time all state wrestling champ, Hall served as captain of the Michigan State University wrestling team, and now is head wrestling coach at Davison High School. He was named national wrestling coach of the year in 2005.

Sue Novara-Reber: (1982 inductee) Northwestern High School graduate, Reber was a two-time world sprint cycling champion, and winner of seven USA titles.

Keith Young: (2010 inductee) Flint Northern graduate, he helped the cross country and track team win a total of four state champions. He was a four-time All American at the University of Tennessee.

These Hall of Fame athletes will share their story and the obstacles they faced before achieving success. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn from these mentors.

Athletes who participate in the Leadership Mentoring program are selected by their schools.

The program is free, thanks to sponsorships from The Flint Journal and Al Serra Auto Plaza.
