Genesys designated a Stroke Center of Excellence

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesys has been designated a Stroke Center of Excellence (COE).
In order to achieve this status, health care facilities first must obtain Advanced Primary Care Stroke Center certification from the Joint Commission. Once this certification is earned, hospitals can work toward COE status from NeuStrategy, a national healthcare strategy organization that conducts the COE survey, focusing on quality of programs, staff, the facility and its technology, operational effectiveness and community education. Health care facilities complying with the American Stroke Association's recommendations for stroke care also qualify for NeuStrategy's COE designation.

Center of Excellence hospitals are:
  • nearly twice as likely to begin radiology and lab tests within 30 minutes of a stroke patient's arrival
  • more likely to use protocols
  • nearly twice as likely to administer IV thrombolytic therapy
  • twice as likely to participate in clinical trials
  • 50 percent more likely to follow up on patients to help determine which treatments work best and at what cost

To obtain advanced certification as a Disease-Specific Care-Advanced Primary Care Stroke Center, Genesys had to meet Joint Commission rigorous national standards and safety goals that demonstrate safe, high quality care, treatment and services for stroke patients, with continued efforts to improve processes.

Genesys is the only hospital in the region to receive advanced certification from the Joint Commission for its stroke services.

In addition to the COE designation and Joint Commission's stroke center certification, the Genesys Stroke Center was selected as one of only seven pilot sites nationally to participate in a quality inititative program sponsored by the National Stroke Association. The association carefully chooses the sites based on their quality and patient outcomes. Facilities selected must have a certified primary stroke center, an existing in-hospital stroke alert, and an existing stroke tracking process that can capture time of in-hospital stroke alert activation throughout each patient's acute treatment. Pilot sites also must initiate quality improvement processes.

The pilot is the first of its kind in the United States.

Genesys also recently received the HealthGrades Women's Health Excellence award for women's medicine, which includes stroke. This designation means Genesys ranks in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationally for clinical excellence in women's care. Only six hospitals in Michigan earned this award.
