Genesys Heart Institute named Center of Excellence for 10th consecutive year

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) For the 10th consecutive year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBS) has designated the Genesys Heart Institute a Cardiac Center of Excellence. To earn this rating, Genesys was evaluated against benchmark criteria established by BCBS.
The rigid standards Genesys had to meet included the following:
  1. Full range of cardiac services - from diagnosis to treatment and outcomes
  2. JCAHO or HFAP accreditation - Genesys has earned accreditation from both organizations (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program)
  3. Medical team comprised of board certified physician sub-specialists available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  4. Cardiac registry that includes risk-adjusted outcomes for heart procedures
  5. Ongoing quality management and improvement programs that demonstrate high quality care processes in place regarding mortality and complication rates
  6. Heart case volumes - Centers of Excellence must perform a minimum of 300 open heart surgeries, 400 angioplasties and 500 cardiac catheterizations for the three most recent years.

"Once again, thanks to the efforts and commitment of the Genesys Heart Institute team, we have achieved a benchmark level of clinical excellence as documented and reported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan," announces Norma Hagenow, president and CEO of Genesys Health System. "The community should take great comfort in knowing a Cardiac Center of Excellence for 10 years running is in their neighborhood."

To ensure the community receives the best heart care possible, Genesys continues to take its heart care services to even higher levels. A recent major stride includes earning Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Heart attack patients have a 37 percent greater chance of survival if they are taken to a medical facility with an accredited Chest Pain Center. Only eight hospitals in Michigan have earned this accreditation.

Another giant step Genesys took was opening the Paul J. "Rocky" Roll Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center, an 11-bed expansion to the Genesys Emergency department designated specifically for patients entering the hospital with chest pain or other cardiac conditions that require immediate attention and continuous monitoring by highly specialized and trained cardiac clinicians.

"The community should also take great comfort in knowing that if you or a loved one is suffering from a heart attack in your home or somewhere in the area, diagnosis time is much faster, thanks to the efforts of the Genesys emergency medicine team and local EMS providers," reports Hagenow.

Genesys and many local EMS providers are equipped with new technology that allows ambulances to transmit a patient's critical heart condition information within seconds to Genesys. A 12-lead EKG system connected to a receiving station in the Genesys Emergency department allows Genesys to start a heart attack patient's treatment process before the patient arrives.

Genesys was the first hospital in the region to install a 12-lead EKG receiving system, and continues to provide advanced training on 12 lead EKG interpretation and rapid diagnosing of heart attacks for EMS providers in Genesee County and North Oakland County.

"I am also very happy to report that door to balloon time at the Genesys Heart Institute averages below 80 minutes, well below the national GOAL of 90 minutes," announces Hagenow.

"What this means to the community is that if you or a loved one is suffering a heart attack, from the time of arrival in the Genesys Emergency department to the time the patient's blocked artery is open averages well below the national goal time," reports Michael Jule, DO, medical director of Emergency Services at Genesys. "Because every single minute counts when a person is having a heart attack, we are saving more lives. Our goal is to continue to reduce those minutes."

Along with its BCBS Cardiac Center of Excellence designation, Genesys also has earned a five star rating for overall cardiac services (from HealthGrades (R) ) for the past four years, and was rated in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for overall cardiac services (by HealthGrades (R), the nation's leading independent health care ratings organization that conducts ratings of all 5,000 US hospitals).
