Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care Fellowship

This combined three year program in diseases of the chest and critical care is designed to provide the clinical and laboratory skills necessary to treat respiratory diseases and the critically ill. A broad understanding of chest diseases, basic chest sciences, critical illness and invasive management will be developed that enables the fellow to teach colleagues, allied health professionals, technical assistants and students.

This program generally accepts one fellow per year.

Requirements for admission:
  • Graduation from an Osteopathic Medical School
  • Satisfactory completion of an AOA or ACGME Internal Medicine Residency program

Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete a rotation with the program director. All visiting residents must complete the Visiting Resident Application On-Line and submit supporting documents 60 days in advance of the rotation.

Year One
  • Focus on development of clinical skills and bedside management of cases in the pulmonary service.
  • Assist in all diagnostic procedures and be actively involved in the pulmonary function and cardiopulmonary exercise laboratory.
  • Learn basics of pulmonary diseases through participation in daily rounds, consultations and lectures.
  • Assist with invasive procedures, including bronchoscopy, right heart catheterization, pleural biopsy, thoracentesis and chest tube insertion.
  • One month rotation in pulmonary physiology and physiological testing in the pulmonary diagnostic facility.
  • Exposure to four months on general floor service.
  • Rotations in sleep disorders, cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing and PEN Team.

Year Two
  • More flexibility with three months of out-service time for electives in immunology, nuclear medicine, pathology, pediatric pulmonary disease, pulmonary neoplasms, respiratory therapy management or sleep disorders.
  • Have the option to repeat service in pulmonary function or exercise physiology.
  • Completion of a research project and prepare an article suitable for publishing in a major journal.
  • Participation in pulmonary medicine symposia presentations once or twice a year.

Year Three/Critical Care
  • Strictly dedicated to the evaluation and management of critically ill patients in the ICU’s.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of illnesses, e.g., ARDS, post-bypass, neurotrauma and sepsis.
  • Indepth experience in ventilator management.
  • Four months of electives to gain experience for individual needs.
  • Participation in weekly review of selected texts and articles in critical care.
