Genesys has the region's only cardiac rapid diagnostic center

In 2006, Genesys took another giant leap forward to ensure the community continues to receive the best heart care possible. The Paul J. "Rocky" Roll Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center (CRDC) is equipped with a team of highly specialized physicians, nurses and clinicians who care exclusively for patients entering the Genesys Emergency department with chest pain or other cardiac conditions that require immediate attention.

The CRDC at Genesys Regional Medical Center includes an 11-bed unit containing a cardiac diagnostic testing area. Patients can remain in this area for all of their testing while under the continuous monitoring of cardiac-trained clinicians and physicians.

On an average, about 5,000 patients a year enter the Genesys Emergency department complaining of chest pain. Genesee County has a very high prevalence of heart disease. About 39 percent of the population eventually will die of cardiac disease, reports Michael Jule, DO, medical director of Genesys Emergency Services.

"Genesys has taken its heart program to a new level of care by providing even faster access to the heart care team," Dr. Jule adds.

The level of care includes obtaining full accreditation as a Chest Pain Center. Heart attack patients have a 37 percent greater chance of survival if they are taken to a medical facility with an accredited Chest Pain Center.

Genesys is the only hospital in the region, and is one of only about 200 in the entire country to earn Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

According to the Society of Chest Pain Centers, the Genesys Heart Institute demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the society. In addition, Genesys was required to successfully complete the society's strict formal process that involved several components such as assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly; effectively integrating the Emergency department with local EMS response teams; effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms; continually meeting the society's standards for staff competency and training; and supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to seek medical care promptly if they display signs of a possible heart attack.

The Genesys Heart Institute's most recent step to integrate the Emergency department with local EMS reponse teams was setting up a 12-lead EKG communication system. Patients suffering a heart attack have a much greater chance of survival, and without heart muscle damage, now that Genesys and local EMS providers are equipped with this new technology that allows ambulances to transmit a patient's critical heart condition information within seconds to Genesys. The system, connected to a receiving station in the Genesys Emergency department, allows the Genesys medical team to start a heart attack patient's treatment process before the patient arrives.

Area consumers agree. For the sixth consecutive year, residents in the surrounding counties have named Genesys the hospital of choice for heart care (residents in the counties of Genesee, Lapeer, North Livingston, North Oakland and Shiawassee).
