What is Neurosurgery?

When most people hear the word "neurosurgery" they automatically think of brain surgery. However, neurosurgery encompasses far more than the brain. Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of the entire nervous system, composed of the brain, spinal cord and spinal column, as well as the nerves that travel through all parts of the body (hands, legs, arms, face). Neurosurgeons provide the operative and non-operative management of neurological disorders. In addition, because neurosurgeons they have extensive training in the diagnosis of all neurological diseases, they are often called upon by emergency room doctors, neurologists, internists, and family practitioners for consultations.

Our Neurosurgeons are experts and leaders in their field and perform over 900 procedures a year at Genesys Regional Medical Center. These procedures are the most technological advanced meaning smaller incisions and faster recovery for our patients. Computer navigation, intraoperative EEG monitoring, and bone morphogenic proteins are only a few of technologies our surgeons use to expedite your healing. Our surgeons frequently share their expertise at educational seminars in the United States as well as internationally. In addition, Genesys is an international training site for minimally invasive spine surgery. Our surgeons treat the most complex patients that others have turned away because of their experience and expertise!
