Female cardiologist at Genesys, shares expertise about #1 killer in women

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Gail Dawson, MD, MS, FAAEP, one of the only female cardiologists in the area, recently joined the medical staff at Genesys and the practice of Regional Cardiology Associates. Her goal is to serve the community she has known for many years.
A Michigan native, Dr. Dawson obtained her medical degree from the University of Michigan, and practiced at Genesys for many years as an emergency medicine physician before returning to school for additional training in internal medicine and cardiology. She earned a fellowship in cardiology at the Detroit Medical Center through Wayne State University, and obtained board certification in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, echocardiography and coronary CT interpretation.

In addition to her extensive cardiology training, Dr. Dawson earned a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics and Clinical Research Design at the University of Michigan. Soon, she will release a book entitled "Easy Interpretation of Biostatistics."

"I am happy to return to this community, to serve the needs of women and men locally," Dr. Dawson reports. "Women in particular are so devoted to caring for others that they often dismiss the symptoms of heart disease." That is why Dr. Dawson wants to talk with women about their #1 killer - heart disease. She will present a talk Feb. 20 at 6 p.m., at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center.

In her presentation, Dr. Dawson will remind women that coronary artery disease (heart disease) is the reason for 50 percent more deaths than breast, ovarian and uterine cancer combined. About 250,000 women die suddenly from myocardial infarction (heart attack) every year. Women are less likely to survive a heart attack than men, and have a higher rate of complications, she points out.

Dr. Dawson also urges women to know the warning signs of heart attack, which often are different from the signs men have. Women should see their doctor when they experience any of these recurring signs: pain in the center of the chest; pain in the ear, jaw or neck; and pain in the back or shoulder area. If these symptoms happen acutely and do not go away, Dr. Dawson advises women (and men) to get to an emergency department quickly.

To meet Dr. Dawson and learn more about women and heart disease including prevention, treatment, and the workings of the heart, call 1-800-882-2012 to sign up for her talk on Feb. 20.
