(GRAND BLANC, MI) Thanks to the "overwhelmingly generous" contribution of local entrepreneur Paul "Rocky" Roll, Genesys Health Foundation has kicked off an ambitious capital campaign to raise more than $2 million for the region's first cardiac rapid diagnostic center (CRDC).

The Rocky Roll Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center, scheduled to open in the spring of 2006, is "one more giant step Genesys is taking to ensure our community receives the best heart care possible," announces Norma Hagenow, president and CEO of Genesys. "As the area's leading heart care provider and a center of excellence in cardiac services, Genesys - with the opening of its own cardiac rapid diagnostic center - will have a team of highly trained physicians, nurses and clinicians who will respond immediately to patients with heart-related symptoms when they enter the Genesys Emergency department."

Roll, owner of Rocky's Great Outdoors in Burton, stepped forward with a $1 million donation to help Genesys raise the funds needed to open the CRDC.

A Genesee County resident for more than 40 years, Roll successfully opened and operated many local businesses. "I've been a very lucky man, thanks to the members of my community," he finds. "I wanted to do something good; I wanted to give something back to the community that supported me through the years. I have a lot of friends who will need Genesys at some point in their life. This is more than a financial investment; it is a personal investment."

The CRDC is an expansion of the Genesys Regional Medical Center - Health Park emergency department. Specialty-trained emergency medicine physicians will diagnose patients entering the Emergency department with any cardiac-related incident including heart attack, chest pain, irregular heartbeat or congestive heart failure, reports Michael Jule, DO, medical director of Genesys Emergency Services.

Genesys will construct the center inside the hospital and adjacent to the Emergency department. The area now used as an auditorium (along with other space) will be converted to an 11-bed unit with a cardiac diagnostic testing area.

"With more and more people at risk of heart disease, it made sense for Genesys to expand its emergency department and dedicate a specialized area for cardiac care," notes Hagenow. "Our goal is to be one of only four accredited centers in Michigan."

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of death in adults in the United States. Each year more than five million people enter hospitals in the US with chest pain. About 600,000 will die of heart disease.

On an average, about 5,000 patients a year enter the Genesys Emergency department complaining of chest pain, Dr. Jule reports. "Genesee County has a high prevalence of heart disease," he adds. "About 39 percent of the population eventually will die of cardiac disease."

"Genesys is taking its heart program to a new level of care by providing even faster access to the heart care team," Dr. Jule points out.

In 2003 and 2004, Genesys received a five star rating from HealthGrades for overall cardiac services. (HealthGrades is a national quality ratings organization that evaluates some 5,000 hospitals in the country for their clinical quality.) HealthGrades also ranked Genesys in the top
5 percent of hospitals in the country for heart surgery. In Michigan, Genesys earned the #4 ranking for heart surgery, and the #6 spot for overall cardiac services.

The Genesys Health Foundation, through a capital campaign, plans to raise about $2 million to open the CRDC. "Rocky's overwhelmingly generous gift will ensure the Genesys Heart Institute continues its tradition of excellence," announces Nick Evans, vice president of the Genesys Health Foundation. "We truly owe Rocky a huge thank you for his investment in our efforts to save the lives of family members, neighbors and other loved ones in the community."

Robert Fuller and David Isbell, local community leaders, are chairing capital campaign efforts. Contributions to the Genesys Heart Institute and the Rocky Roll Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center are tax deductible.
