Genesys offers diabetes prevention class

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI)
Are you overweight?
Are you older than 45?
Do you have high blood pressure?
Do you have high cholesterol?
Do you have a family member with diabetes?

If you answered "yes" to one or more of these questions, you may be at risk for diabetes.

The Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center offers a class that can help you.

"Preventing Diabetes" is a three-session class that will provide participants with advice, information and education on how to reduce the risk of diabetes and adopt practical lifestyle changes.

Next session will take place on Tuesday evenings Nov. 6, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4, from 5:45 pm to 8 pm at the Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center located on the Genesys Regional Medical Center Health Park campus in Grand Blanc Township.

Topics covered in the class include: understanding the implications of elevated blood sugar, risk factors of diabetes and learning how to reduce them, lifestyle changes and choices, nutrition, snacking, eating out, benefits of physical activity, identifying cues that impact food and activity decisions, and obstacles to maintaining a lifestyle that will prevent diabetes.

Cost is $35. Pre-registration is required.

To sign up for this session or an upcoming session, call the Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center at 810-606-7720.

Certified educators (including registered dietitians, nurses and social workers) help clients understand their medical condition, and offer support on the journey to behavior change.

Genesys also offers diabetes support group classes every other month. Classes offer support, education, guest speakers and group discussions. Those with diabetes and their families and friends are welcome. The next support group takes place Thursday, Nov. 15 from 1:30 pm to 3 pm in the Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center.
