Grief teleconference focuses on diversity and end-of-life care
(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) "Living with grief: diversity and end-of-life care" is the topic for the 16th annual Living with Grief teleconference Wednesday, April 29, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Hurley Medical Center's Merliss Brown auditorium on the Hurley campus in Flint.
The free teleconference will focus on how diversity influences end-of-life decisionmaking, and the impact culture has at the time of death and during bereavement. One of the goals of this teleconference is to increase sensitivity and improve the skills necessary to work with culturally diverse individuals in end-of-life care. The program also will cover the challenges faced when cultural considerations may impact ethical concerns.
"Living with grief" is open to health care professionals and families interested in learning about issues that affect end-of-life care. It also provides an opportunity for a wide range of professionals - physicians, nurses, funeral directors, psychologists, educators, social workers and bereavement
coordinators - to share their experiences and ideas, while obtaining continuing education credits. The conference is free; participants requesting CEUs will pay $25.
After the teleconference, a live panel discussion will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Local experts serving on the panel are:
John Desmond, LFD, CFSP, funeral director for Pixley Funeral Home in Rochester and former vice president of AJ Desmond and Sons Funeral Directors
Purushottam Naik, MD, geriatrician in Flint and medical director of Heartland Hospice and Willowbrook Manor Skilled Nursing facility
Michael Rucks, EdD, professor at Baker College of Flint where he teaches psychology and sociology including the psychology of death and dying, and cultural diversity
Carolyn Stubbs, LMS, ACSW, bereavement coordinator and social worker for McLaren Visiting Nurse Hospice
Moderator of the national teleconference is Frank Sesno, professor of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, and special correspondent with CNN. He will lead this panel:
Samira Beckwith, LCSW, CHE, president and CEO of Hope Hospice and Community Services in Fort Myer, Florida
