Grand Blanc Daisy troop helps the uninsured

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Daisy Scout Troop 70176 of Grand Blanc made a commitment several weeks ago to "respect others," and chose helping the uninsured of Genesee County as their first activity to demonstrate this way of thinking and living.
For the past several weeks, the 6 and 7 year olds have been collecting personal hygiene items for distribution at the annual Cover the Uninsured Week Expo next Tuesday, March 24. Initially, the 15 scouts sent 500 letters to families from Cook Elementary School in Grand Blanc, asking for donations.

Through their diligence, hundreds of items were donated. These include: shampoo, soap, deodorant, wash cloths, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes and much more!

Next step is the assembly line: the Daisy Scouts will assemble these personal hygiene items into individual kits for those attending the Cover the Uninsured Week expo.

The process takes place tomorrow, Thursday, March 19, at 6:15 p.m., at Cook Elementary School in Grand Blanc.

Each year, during Cover the Uninsured Week, personal hygiene kits are provided to the uninsured and underinsured at the expo. These kits are the first to go. Last year, about 300 kits were distributed and were gone in about one hour. Thanks to the efforts of Daisy Scout Troop 70176 as well as other organizations in the community, hundreds of needy people will receive these kits next week.

Holy Family Church and religious education classes in Grand Blanc, along with Boy Scout Troop 212 in Fenton, also collected hygiene items for the expo.

Cover the Uninsured Week Expo takes place next Tuesday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint. At the expo, the uninsured will have an opportunity to sign up for health coverage through Genesee Health Plan *, Medicaid or MI Child/Healthy Kids. The expo - open to insured and underinsured - also includes: free food and clothing (while supplies last); free screenings (blood pressure, blood sugar, glucose, diabetes, dental and vision); applications for the food stamp program; "Ask the Doctor" booth; "Ask the Pharmacist" booth; "Ask the Podiatrist" booth; and free information from more than 20 local agencies that offer services for the uninsured.

*To enroll in Genesee Health Plan, you will need photo ID, social security card and proof of income.
