Genesys run/walk to benefit grief recovery camp for kids

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) The 9th annual Genesys Home & Hospice Care 5K Run/Walk will take place Saturday, Sept. 26 on the grounds of Genesys Regional Medical Center - Health Park.
Proceeds from this year's event will go to Camp Brave Hearts, a grief recovery camp held each year for children and teens who have lost a loved one. The weekend camp - for kids ages 5 to 17 - is held every summer at Camp Copneconic in Fenton.

Counselors, therapists and trained volunteers work with participants to explore their feelings and find inner strength as they go through the healing process, explains Cheryl Laramore, bereavement coordinator for Genesys Home & Hospice Care. The camp also provides an opportunity for kids to connect with others their own age who have lost someone they love, honor the memories of their loved one and obtain coping tools to deal with their grief and move ahead, Laramore adds.

Finding laughter also is a key in the grieving process. Camp includes the use of creative arts - music, art therapy, creative writing and drama - as a natural outlet of expression.

Camp Brave Hearts also is a place for each child to take a look at his or her own personal grief and coping skills to better understand the healing process.

Those interested in running or walking in the Genesys Home & Hospice Care 5K Run/Walk can call the Genesys Health Foundation at 810-606-7909, or register online at www.genesys.org.
