Genesys opens free mini-medical school

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Do you want to learn more about certain medical conditions?
Do you want to alleviate your fears about medical procedures?

Do you want to take charge of your own health?

The Genesys Learning Institute offers this opportunity through a free mini-medical school opening in September.

Everyone in the community interested in learning about their health is welcome to take classes on the Genesys Health Park campus.

Only about 70 mini-medical schools exist across the country, and Genesys is one of the only hospital-based schools.

Genesys chose to open this school to support the public in their pursuit of health and wellbeing by helping individuals become more educated consumers when it comes to their health, reports Norma Hagenow, chief learning officer of the Genesys Learning Institute. "And they will learn from medical experts!" Faculty is comprised mainly of physicians on staff at Genesys.

"As a destination for learning, Genesys has expanded its focus from internal training and education for physicians, nurses and staff, to the community," Hagenow adds.

Classes will take place on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center, located on the Genesys Health Park campus (off Holly Road and Baldwin in Grand Blanc Township).

Curriculum is interactive - students will have an opportunity to share their knowledge on the subject before class begins, allowing instructors to tailor their content to the needs of the group.

Genesys Learning Institute mini-medical school fall schedule includes the following:

Sept. 17
Anatomy 101
Instructor: Lisa Guyot, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon at Genesys

Colds and flus

The public can sign up for one, two, three or all of the classes. University of Michigan-Flint graduate students will receive graduate credit for attending the entire fall semester of classes (paying usual graduate education fees), and GISD teachers will receive CEUs (costs comparable to usual certification programs).

To register for mini-medical school classes, call the Genesys Learning Institute at 810-606-7899.

The winter semester, which begins in January 2008, includes courses on cancer, diabetes, women's health, heart care, hospice, diagnostics and homeland security. Physicians on staff at Genesys will teach most of these courses.
