Genesys Heart Institute earns Chest Pain Center accreditation

(Genesee County, MI) The Society of Chest Pain Centers has granted Genesys full three-year accreditation as a Chest Pain Center. Genesys was the fourth hospital in Michigan, and #162 in the nation, to earn accreditation. Heart attack patients have a 37 percent greater chance of survival if they are taken to a medical facility with an accredited Chest Pain Center.
Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the US, with about 600,000 people dying each year of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by reducing the time it takes to receive treatment, increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment, and educating the public to recognize the early symptoms of a possible heart attack.

According to The Society of Chest Pain Centers, the Genesys Heart Institute has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the society. In addition, Genesys was required to successfully complete the society's formal process that included eight key components:
  1. Integrating the Emergency department with the local emergency medical system
  2. Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly
  3. Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
  4. Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
  5. Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
  6. Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
  7. Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
  8. Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

"Genesys has made a commitment to this community to provide the highest level of heart care possible," reports Norma Hagenow, president and CEO of Genesys. "Achieving Chest Pain Center accreditation is a huge step for us and for those we serve. Patients coming to Genesys with chest pain should take comfort in knowing they are receiving care from one of the best heart teams in the state."

HealthGrades, a national quality ratings organization, affirms the Genesys Heart Institute's level of excellence. Genesys earned these national quality excellence ratings:
  1. Top 5 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services
  2. Top 10 percent in Michigan (#2) for overall cardiac services
  3. Five star ratings (the highest rating possible) for clinical excellence in coronary bypass surgery, cardiac interventional procedures, treatment of heart failure, and treatment of atrial fibrillation.

In addition to HealthGrades ratings of excellence, Genesys was named "best hospital" for heart care five years in a row from area consumers. A telephone survey of residents in the five surrounding counties by the Sigma Group in Lincoln, Nebraska revealed these findings.
