Local Cover the Uninsured Week activities announced

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Cover the Uninsured Week (CTUW) - April 27 to May 3 - is held annually to raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured and underinsured in this country in an effort to affect change. Locally, Health Access, with the support of several local organizations, will conduct the following activities in Genesee County:
Monday, April 28
abc12 call in show
5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Panelists will answer questions from viewers about health care coverage concerns and access to health care.

Tuesday, April 29
Cover the Uninsured Expo
11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church, 746 South Saginaw Street in Flint
The expo offers an opportunity for the uninsured to sign up for health care coverage through the Genesee Health Plan, MI Child/Healthy Kids, MOMS and Plan First. (To enroll in Genesee Health Plan, please bring photo ID, social security card and proof of income.)

The expo includes: free food and clothing (while supplies last); free health screenings - blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, dental and vision; Ask the Pharmacist booth; Ask the Doctor booth; free information from more than 20 local agencies that offer services for the uninsured; and applications for food stamps.

Thursday, May 1
The Business of Health: Understanding the Benefits of a Healthy Workforce
8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Informational booths are open after the talk from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Speakers:
Eilene Frank from the American Institute of Preventive Medicine
J. Randy Jones from HealthPlus of Michigan
Ben Roof from A-Frame Awards
This breakfast talk will provide local employers with advice on keeping a healthy workforce while maintaining costs. After the talk, local businesses will exhibit information that may serve as helpful resources for employers.

Community Caring Awards
8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
First Presbyterian Church, 746 South Saginaw Street in Flint
This breakfast meeting will recognize businesses and individuals in the community who have supported the uninsured by donating services, time or supplies to ensure those without health care coverage can obtain the medical care and services they need. Dawn Jones, reporter for abc12, will emcee this free event.
