Genesys offers free class on how to be a healthy traveler, and genetics of medicine - what makes you, you

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Clark Headrick, DO, physician on staff at Genesys, will present a free class on how to be a healthy traveler - how to avoid contracting illnesses and how to treat those illnesses if you do contract one. He also will clarify misperceptions about traveling. The class, part of the Genesys Learning Institute's mini-medical school, will take place Monday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m., at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center on the Genesys Health Park campus (off Holly Road and Baldwin in Grand Blanc Township).
Following his talk, June Murphy, DO, Genesys perinatologist, will conduct a class on the genetics of medicine - what makes you, you. The evening concludes at 9:30 p.m.

Curriculum is interactive - students will have an opportunity to share their knowledge on the subject before class begins, allowing instructors to tailor their content to the needs of the group.

The Genesys Learning Institute's mini-medical school opened last month with a class on anatomy, colds and flus, and two CPR certification classes.

Everyone in the community interested in learning about their health is welcome to take classes through the school, which is free (University of Michigan-Flint graduate students will receive graduate credit for attending the entire fall semester of classes - paying usual graduate education fees; and GISD teachers will receive CEUs - costs comparable to usual certification programs).

Genesys chose to open this school to support the public in their pursuit of health and wellbeing by helping individuals become more educated consumers when it comes to their health. And the school provides consumers with an opportunity to learn from medical experts. Faculty is comprised mostly of physicians on staff at Genesys.

Genesys Learning Institute's mini-medical school fall schedule concludes with these courses:

Oct. 22
Pediatrics - immunizations
Instructor: William Sheppard, MD, family practitioner at Genesys

Obesity and nutrition - are you what you eat?
Instructors: Trissa Torres, MD, FACPM, medical director of Genesys Health and Disease Management; and Jane Hill and Kathy Peshke, certified diabetes educators

To register for mini-medical school classes, call the Genesys Learning Institute at 810-606-7899.

The winter semester, which begins in January 2008, includes courses on cancer, diabetes, women's health, heart care, hospice, diagnostics and homeland security. Physicians on staff at Genesys will teach most of these courses.
