Genesys Hospice seeks volunteers

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesys Home & Hospice Care is looking for volunteers to work with hospice patients. Training for these positions begins Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and runs every Tuesday and Thursday through Feb. 25, at St. John Catholic Church Family Center at 505 North Dayton Street in Davison.
The 24-hour training focuses on the hospice philosophy, developing listening skills, gaining awareness of feelings regarding death and dying, patient care, spiritual care and bereavement.

Hospice volunteers are needed to visit patients; provide companionship, respite and transportation; deliver and pick up medical equipment; write letters; read to patients; perform light housekeeping; and offer bereavement and spiritual support. Volunteers also are needed to work at the Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich, a 22-bed facility that offers residential hospice care for the terminally ill.

Hospice is considered a model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life. Through hospice, a team of professionals provide care to terminally ill patients and their caregivers. Volunteers are integral members of this team.
