Holly Reunion with a Cause yields recordbreaking amount for cancer patients

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesys Health Foundation once again is pleased to announce that the fifth annual Holly Reunion with a Cause raised a recordbreaking amount - almost $54,000 from this one event held on the track of Holly High School Friday, Aug. 8.
All funds from this annual walk and celebration are used to assist Genesys cancer patients.

The evening began with opening ceremonies kicked off by Butchie Mackey, a Holly resident and reunion organizer who welcomed hundreds of people who joined the festivities. Mark Taylor, president and CEO of Genesys Health System, followed Mackey's welcome, extending his gratitude to everyone who gathered to make a difference in the lives of cancer victims and their families.

After a trophy presentation to "Friends," a group of walkers who collected the most money - $13,129 - the survivors victory lap took place. All cancer survivors walked the first lap as hundreds of family members, friends and supporters applauded. "The walk symbolizes hope for others who are victims of this disease," reports Nick Evans, vice president of Genesys Health Foundation, who helped organize the event.

In addition to the walk, Reunion with a Cause included an evening filled with family activities, entertainment, a candle lighting ceremony, music and refreshments.

Last year, Reunion with a Cause yielded a little over $53,000 for Genesys cancer patients.

Funds from the event are used to help cancer patients pay for medication, medical equipment, rental equipment such as wheelchairs, private pay aides, transportation to and from cancer treatments, and other special needs not covered by health insurance.

"This is a fun-filled night to celebrate and commemorate those whose lives have been touched by cancer, and to raise money to help these people obtain the services and care they need but cannot afford," Evans points out. "Everyone in the community is invited to show their support by participating in Reunion with a Cause - by walking the track, by cheering for walkers, or by making a contribution of any amount."

Event chairpersons for the 2008 Reunion with a Cause were Marianne Nickels and Charlene Wright. Teams who raised money at the walk included: Barb's Brat Pack, Big Tony's Pizzeria, Holly Cub Scouts, Calvary Cavalry, Citizens Bank, Classy Misfits, Curves, Friends, Genesys Health System, Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, Holly Area Schools, HIT, Mackey Road Runners, Margetta's, Presbyterian Church and The State Bank.

In-kind donors were: Kerton Lumber Company, the Red Devil restaurant, Holly Donut Shop and Villagers Family Restaurant.

Topaz sponsors included: Sam's Club, The MRI Diagnostic Centers of Michigan - South (Grand Blanc), Mills Mechanical, Sarah and Leo Milmet, Sigma Beta Sorority (Epsilon Kappa Chapter), Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, North Oakland County Fire Authority, and Bar's Leaks.

Next year's Reunion with a Cause will take place Friday, Aug. 14.

For those who missed this year's event, you have another opportunity to support Reunion with a Cause by participating in the Walters Memorial four-person golf scramble this Monday, Sept. 1, at Heather Highlands golf course in Highland. For details, call 248-887-4949.
