Genesys receives chest pain center reaccreditation

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) The Society of Chest Pain Centers has awarded Genesys Regional Medical Center chest pain center reaccreditation. Genesys is one of 375 hospitals in the nation, one of only nine in Michigan, and the only hospital in the region to receive the designation as a Chest Pain Center.
Earning this status means patients have a 37 percent better chance of surviving a heart attack if they are brought to Genesys.

"Patients with chest pain who come to Genesys can be completely confident they are in the right place to receive the best heart care from a team who meets and exceeds international heart care standards and very stringent quality measures," announces Michael Jule, DO, medical director of Emergency Services at Genesys.

"Measures established by the Society of Chest Pain Centers focus on rapid diagnosis and treatment of heart attack victims.

"Time is tissue," Dr. Jule continues. "Every minute lost in diagnosing heart patients can mean irreparable damage to the heart muscle. Our team of emergency medicine physicians, cardiologists, nurses and clinicians not only must demonstrate advanced clinical skills, but also must continue their cardiac response training in order to care for heart patients."

According to the Society of Chest Pain Centers, Genesys has "demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the society.

Key indicators that hospitals must demonstrate to obtain accreditation include:

1. integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
2. assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly
3. effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
4. continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
5. ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
6. supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

The Chest Pain Center's established standards are designed to improve the consistency and quality of care provided to patients. Accreditation ensures centers meet or exceed quality of care measures. In addition, the center's protocol-driven and systematic approach to patient management allows physicians to reduce time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective, and to better monitor patients when it is not clear if they are having a heart attack. This observation helps ensure patients are not sent home too early or needlessly admitted.

That is the reason Genesys opened the Paul J. "Rocky" Roll Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center almost three years ago - to diagnose and initiate treatment for patients with suspected heart disease to help them avoid a heart attack or the progression of heart disease. The 11-bed unit is an expansion of the emergency department staffed with clinicians specially trained to care for heart patients.
