MCBC now provides blood services to Genesys

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Beginning July 1, Michigan Community Blood Centers (MCBC) will provide blood services to Genesys Health System.
MCBC was formed more than 50 years ago by physicians and hospitals in the Detroit area who wanted a community-based blood supply through a nonprofit entity. This group believed a community-based blood bank could provide better service to assure a constant, fresh, plentiful supply of blood.

Over the years, the organization has expanded to encompass four service areas across Michigan - West Michigan, Southwest Michigan, Northwest Michigan and East-Central Michigan - providing services to 1.5 million people and 23 hospitals.

MCBC is part of America's Blood Centers, an international network of 77 nonprofit, community blood centers operating more than 600 collection sites in 45 states and Canada; and providing 50 percent of the US blood supply and 100 percent of Canada's blood supply to more than 180 million people and more than 4,200 health care facilities across North America.

The blood organization is licensed and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Michigan Department of Community Health. MCBC is accredited by the AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks), an international association that supports the highest standards of medical, technical and administrative performance; and scientific investigation. AABB inspects blood centers for quality, safety and leadership.

MCBC will offer Genesys and the community expanded services to include: blood collections, blood testing, blood storage and distribution of 100 percent of the blood Genesys will need, mobile blood drives, a marrow donor registry, a stem cell/cord blood bank, educational programs for schools and community groups, and medical consultations.

Genesys chose MCBC because all services will be conducted in Michigan, MCBC offers an extensive network of services previously not available in this area, and handling blood is what this organization does exclusively.

"Quality of service is always our number one priority, and, based on this organization's track record, we expect the best quality product and service," reports Carol Watkins, director of Laboratory Services for Genesys. "We also were very impressed with their safety record. MCBC uses the latest technology to improve patient safety.

Genesys will continue to conduct blood drives four times a year at the hospital. Next blood drive is Thursday, July 30. If you would like to donate blood, call Genesys at 810-606-5516.
