Genesee County's first free baby shower takes place Sept. 20

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesee County new parents, expecting parents, and parents with young children (birth to 5) are invited to a free baby shower, Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m., at Genesys Regional Medical Center - Health Park.

This first ever event is designed to educate parents about the many resources available in this community that will help them provide a safe and healthy start for their children.

The baby shower, hosted by Genesee County Great Start Parent Coalition, includes more than 30 displays and exhibits; an Ask the Doctor booth; free dental screenings (for children and adults); free fingerprinting; a fire safety house with demonstrations; car seat and booster seat information and demonstrations; free Denver II screenings (to help evaluate a child's developmental level); manicures; tours of the Genesys Family Birthing Center; information on 4D ultrasounds provided by June Murphy, DO, Genesys perinatologist; giveaways and refreshments - all free!

Dozens of door prizes will be awarded throughout the event. These include booster seats provided by Genesys Health Foundation and Genesys Trauma Services, high chairs, strollers, baskets of baby goodies, diapers and much more!

"We plan to 'shower' our families with all kinds of gifts!" announces Helen Maxwell, from the Great Start Parent Coalition who is organizing the baby shower.

The event also features two free talks:
11 a.m.: Infant and toddler oral health care - presented by Cynthia Ezell, coordinator of Early Childhood Oral Health programs at Mott Children's Health Center, this talk provides information on early preventive measures for healthy teeth and gums. Participants will receive free dental kits.

Noon: Keeping kids safe - Brad Barksdale, a retired police chief, will talk about safety at home, motor vehicle safety, monitoring babysitters and caregivers, internet safety and travel safety.

Free bus transportation will be provided to and from the baby shower for those who need it. To make arrangements for a free bus pass to and from Genesys on baby shower day, call 810-237-6161.

In addition to the baby shower, abc12 and CARS 108 are conducting an all day diaper drive the day before the baby shower - Friday, Sept. 19. All diapers will be distributed to families at the baby shower.

The baby shower is part of the work provided by the Genesee County Great Start Collaborative, which is a partnership of organizations and parents working together to improve the programs and services offered for all Genesee County families with children from infants to age 5. Goal of the collaborative is to assure each child will be safe, healthy, happy and ready to learn and succeed in life.

"The baby shower will help parents become aware of the opportunities available in our community to help them achieve the best possible start for their children," Maxwell reports.

Genesys Regional Medical Center at Health Park is located in Grand Blanc Township between Holly and Baldwin Roads (exit 108 off I-75). The event takes place in the atrium located just inside the main entrance.
