Genesys Trauma Services offers free helmet fitting May 28

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Did you know …
… the typical bicyclist hit by a car and killed is a sober male over the age of 16 riding on a summer evening without a bicycle helmet?

… between 45 percent and 88 percent of cyclists’ brain injuries can be prevented if riders were wearing a helmet?

… about 50 percent of cyclists do not wear a helmet?

… about 2/3 of that 50 percent are wearing the wrong-sized helmet or are not wearing it correctly?

… only an average of 17 percent of bicyclists wear a helmet that is fitted properly?

That is why Injury Prevention Services at Genesys – a component of Genesys Trauma Services – is offering free bike helmet fittings throughout the summer.

Next fitting is Saturday, May 28, from noon to 4 p.m. at Bicentennial Park in Grand Blanc (off Grand Blanc Road).

Zach Landers, RN, Injury Prevention specialist with Genesys Trauma Services, developed a helmet safety program because "the number of head traumas suffered from a poor-fitting helmet or riding without a helmet are staggering," he reports.

“Our goal as an injury prevention center for Genesee County and its surrounding communities is to educate riders of all ages on the proper fit for a bicycle helmet, and to make sure they are wearing a helmet. Our team will fit helmets for all ages – from toddlers to most adults – and provide brief, hands on education during the process. It takes less than five minutes to fit a helmet while educating parents and kids,” he points out. “These five minutes can save another life.”

Landers also notes that as injury prevention specialist for Genesys, he will go into the community throughout the year, armed with all kinds of educational resources to help everyone live a safer life – this includes injury prevention presentations to local schools, skiing and snowboarding safety training at Mt. Holly, concussion and injury prevention lectures to ski clubs, hunting season safety and summer safety.

“The Genesys Emergency department medical team sees an unnecessary number of sunburn cases throughout the summer – and many are second degree burns. These are easily preventable, and will be part of our summer safety education,” Landers adds.

Genesys Trauma Services and Injury Prevention will partner with Assenmacher's Cycling Center in Grand Blanc on Saturday, May 28, to provide a comprehensive bike safety event at Bicentennial Park (noon to 4 p.m.) that includes:

free helmet fittings
free helmets, while supplies last
free bicyle safety checks
free tire inflations
free bicycle fittings
free limited bicycle adjustments and some repairs
