Sign up for health coverage at CTUW expo

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) Genesee County uninsured residents have an opportunity to sign up for health care coverage at the annual Cover the Uninsured Week Expo, Tuesday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church on South Saginaw Street in downtown Flint.
Those who need coverage can sign up for the *Genesee Health Plan, MI Child/Healthy Kids or Medicaid. Counselors will walk enrollees through all of the application steps.

The expo also includes the following:

free food and clothing (while supplies last)
free personal hygiene kits (while supplies last)
free health screenings - blood pressure, blood sugar, glucose, diabetes, dental and vision
Ask the Doctor booth
Ask the Pharmacist booth
Ask the Podiatrist booth
applications for food stamps
free information from more than 20 local agencies that offer services for the uninsured (includes Shelter of Flint, Mott Children's Health Center, Carriage Town Ministries, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, The Disability Network, Social Security Administration, American Cancer Society, Genesee County Health department and many more)

Health Access, a sponsor of Cover the Uninsured Week activities, is a grant-funded program that helps the uninsured obtain medical care. Health Access care managers will help individuals and families find a doctor, find programs that will help pay medical bills, obtain needed prescription medication, and locate community resources to assist with their varied needs.

About 46 million Americans, including more than 60,000 Genesee County residents, lack adequate health coverage. Cover the Uninsured Week - March 22 through March 28 - is held annually to raise awareness of this national issue that impacts thousands of people in this community, in hopes of affecting change.

In addition to the expo, local CTUW activities include:

ABC12 call in show
Monday, March 23
5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Panelists will answer questions from viewers about health care coverage concerns and access to health care.

Crisis in Healthcare Town Hall meeting
Thursday, March 26
1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Flint Institute of Arts
(program will be televised at a later date on ABC12)

Friday, March 27
Community Caring Awards
8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
First Presbyterian Church, 746 South Saginaw Street in Flint
This breakfast meeting will recognize businesses and individuals in the community who have supported the uninsured and underserved by donating services, time or supplies to ensure those without health care coverage can obtain the medical care and services they need. Leslie Toldo, meteorologist and medical reporter for ABC12, will emcee this free event.
