Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia (ARD)
Care Program Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias are diseases which progressively rob the individual of normal functional activities both physically and emotionally. At Genesys Convalescent Center, we have designed a unique care program and provide staff with specialized training that enables us to provide the highest quality care for your loved one. Our program strives to promote an atmosphere that supports the special strengths and needs of these special persons.
The ARD Unit
The ARD unit at Genesys Convalescent Center is a 20-bed secured area. The residents are provided 24-hour nursing care with specialized activities.
Families and residents are encouraged to bring personal belongings to create a homelike setting. All bedrooms are semi-private with an adjoining half-bath. There is a sitting area as well as a multi-purpose room for activities and dining. We enjoy a secure backyard and courtyard for outdoor activities.
The program provides a predictable daily routine with activities scheduled from early morning until evening, allowing free time for relaxation and naps. Activities include exercise, music therapy, arts and crafts, cooking, reminiscing, current events, karaoke, sing-a-longs, bingo, gardening and special events. Meals are specially designed by the Center’s dietitian and served one item at a time to decrease confusion. Residents are encouraged to take their meals with the group for socialization.
When not participating in an activity, residents can visit with each other. Families are encouraged to visit any time, and residents may go out with families on leave-of-absences
The Unit has a multidisciplinary care team, including nurses, social service staff, certified nurse aides, dietary staff and physicians. The direct care staff is trained in the care of the
demented resident as well as family support and education. The multidisciplinary team completes individual care plans and assessments for each resident which are revised every
three months or as necessary to provide the maximum level of functioning as possible.
As Time Progresses
While on our unit, your loved one will be cared for in the most compassionate and professional manner. As the disease progresses and the resident’s abilities change, his or her plan of care will change as well. Eventually, the ARD program may no longer benefit the resident. At that time, family and/or responsible parties will discuss with our social service staff options that best meet the resident’s needs.
The staff at Genesys Convalescent Center strive to provide care for the resident and the resident’s family as well. In conjunction with Genesys Health System and the Alzheimer’s
Association, support groups meet regularly throughout the community to help families cope with the challenges of the disease process. We encourage families to communicate with us regularly regarding the care provided to their loved one. Families are encouraged to attend routine care conferences to discuss your loved one’s progress.
