NPI Number (National Provider Identifier)

All trainees are required to obtain an NPI # (National Provider Identifier). The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique, government-issued, standard identification number for individual health care providers and provider organizations like clinics, hospitals, schools and group practices. Every health care provider is required to have an NPI for any business transaction or reimbursement with the federal government. The NPI replaces other identifiers assigned to health care providers, such as those assigned by health plans, government programs and health care purchasers for the purpose of conducting these business transactions. The government has contracted with an external company (NPPES) for processing applications and developing these random 10-digit numbers for applicants.

To obtain an NPI number, please log onto the NPPES website. It’s a quick and easy process. Once you obtain your number, please forward it to your designated coordinator in Medical Education. Please note that the NPI number does not replace your Federal DEA number or State License/Controlled Substance number.

Please Note: You must have a Medical License Number before you may apply for an NPI. Your Program Coordinator will forward your license number to you once it's received.
