Make a difference – be a Genesys Hospice Volunteer!

Genesys Hospice Volunteers are the heart of hospice. You too can be part of this special group.

Training for new volunteers begins Tuesday, February 2, 2010 and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday through February 25, 2010 from 6-9pm. Classes will be held at: St John Catholic Church Family Center, 505 N Dayton St, Davison, Mi 48423.

Hospice is considered to be a model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life. Through hospice, a team of professionals provide care to terminally ill patients and their caregivers – and volunteers are at the heart of the Genesys Hospice team! Volunteers provide vigil care, companionship and assistance in patient’s homes and in the Care Center.

Hospice volunteers who visit patients in the Home Hospice setting provide companionship, respite, transportation, delivering and/or picking up medical equipment, writing letters for patients, reading to patients, light housework and bereavement and spiritual care.

Volunteers are also utilized in the Genesys Hospice Care Center. The Care Center is a 22-bed facility located in Goodrich that provides residential hospice care for the terminally ill. In addition to residential care, inpatient level of care is provided to patients for symptom management. Volunteers in the Care Center provide companionship, feed patients, assist with activities and fund-raisers and answer the phones.

The 24-hour training focuses on the hospice philosophy, developing listening skills, gaining awareness of feelings regarding death and dying, patient care, spiritual care and bereavement.
