Update: Nurse Extern program eligibility and timeline information has been updated below. Please see the changes in bold.

Program Description
The Nurse Extern program at Genesys Regional Medical Center will provide nursing students the opportunity to enhance the skills they have learned in their nursing program by working directly with a RN during the summer. Job responsibilities will include basic patient care and treatments such as foley catheters, dressing changes, tube feedings, trach care and suctioning. As an Extern, you can elect one day per month as a paid observational day in a specialty area such as ICU, Tissue Trauma, Discharge Planning, etc. Nurse externs have the option to continue their employment in the fall in a nurse aide capacity.

The nurse extern positions are part-time with availability on 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd shift. The majority of the opportunities will be on the medical/surgical and telemetry units. The med/surg units include: Pulmonary/General Medicine, Ortho/Neuro, General Surgery, Oncology/General Medicine and Rehab. There will also be some availability to work on an ICU unit: Medical ICU, Neuro/Trauma ICU, Cardiac ICU and Surgical ICU. The ICU positions will only be available on 2^nd and 3^rd shift.

Program Eligibility

• Completion of the Fundamentals of Nursing
• Completion of two adult medical/surgical clinical
• GPA of 3.0 or higher

• $14.00 per hour with shift differentials on 2nd and 3rd shift
• 2nd shift differential is 7%, 3rd shift differential is 8%

• Applications are accepted Feb. 1 to Feb. 28
• Applications will be reviewed in early March
• Interviews will be conducted in late March
• Positions will be filled by April and all applicants will be notified

• Complete the online application for Nurse Extern. (It will be available online from Feb. 1 to Feb. 28.)
• Mail the following documents:
  • Cover letter that answers the following questions: 1) Why did you chose nursing as a career? 2) What are your short term and long term career goals? 3) Why should Genesys select you as a nurse extern?
  • Resume
  • Current nursing transcripts
  • Two Reference Request Forms completed by a nursing instructor or clinical instructor (forms are located on the website)
