Basic Fetal Monitoring
Electronic Fetal Monitoring is an important tool used to ensure optimal maternal & fetal outcome. This three-day course provides 20.2 contact hours.

Labor & Delivery
This offering includes topics such as physiological and psychologic adaptations to pregnancy, true and false labor, the four stages of labor, 6 "P's," augmentation of labor, and more. There are 40.5 nursing contact hours.

Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Program
The Provider course is a 9 hour class day that provides comprehensive training for health care providers whose job responsibilities may require them to participate in neonatal resuscitation. This course provides 8.1 contact hours.

S.T.A.B.L.E. Program
This educational program, endorsed by the March of Dimes, provides general guidelines for the assessment and stabilization of sick infants in the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization period. "S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six program modules: Sugar and Safe Care, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support for the family. This all day course provides 8.0 contact hours.

Post-Partum Core Class/Care of the Newborn Core Class
The Post Partum Core Class is a five day offering (28.3 contact hours) on post-partum topics related to: Physiologic and psychologic adaptations, breast feeding, C-section, and more. The Newborn Core Class (18.8 contact hours) discusses the well and ill baby and includes topics related to transition to extra-uterine life, thermoregulation, neonatal infections, gestational age determination, and more.

Perioperative Nursing In Obstetrics
This 13.5 contact hour offering focus on Perioperative Nursing as it relates to the obstetrical population. Topics include: The principles of aseptic technique, scrub, and circulator roles, instrument handling, and more.

AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course
Certified AWHONN instructor, Jennifer Copeland, teaches this two-day workshop that focuses on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring, knowledge and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. The didactic session (one day) is an analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles of FHR monitoring technology, tracing skills. The skills day (day two) focuses on practice and testing/demonstration of skills of auscultation, performing Leopold's Maneuvers, placement of the IUPC and scalp electrode, interpretation of tracings, identification of indicated nursing interventions, and communication and documentation.

Perinatal nurses with at least 6 months of experience with fetal monitoring should attend. Offers 18 contact hours.

Advanced AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Course
This workshop is a one day course (12 contact hours) focusing on the application of advanced fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills intrapartum nursing practice (contact hour credit includes independent study in preparation for the workshop). The content presented in this workshop builds on the essential knowledge and skills gained through the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring course.

Recommendations prior to attending the workshop include:

  • One year Fetal Monitoring experience
  • Prior successful completion of AWHONN's intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course.
  • Review AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring textbook.
  • Review the Advanced Fetal Monitoring Practices and Principles (AFHMPP) outline and suggested readings.
