Inpatient Rehab
Recovery through rehabilitation
The Genesys Inpatient Rehabilitation Center provides care for people who need rehabilitation treatment due to a disability or prolonged illness. We immediately focus on helping you resume a productive life by becoming as independent as possible. Our staff is dedicated to teaching and supporting you and your family every step of the way.
What will I do in Rehabilitation?
What you do in rehabilitation depends on what you need to become successful upon discharge. You may work to improve your independence in many areas. These include:
- self-care skills such as feeding, grooming, bathing and dressing
- mobility skills such as transferring, walking or self-propelling a wheelchair
- communication skills in speech and language
- cognitive skills such as memory or problem-solving
- social skills for interacting with other people
Family Participation
The Rehabilitation Program promotes family involvement in rehabilitation. In the early phases of care, the rehabilitation team develops a treatment plan with the patient and his/her family. An admission conference is scheduled within the first few days of the rehab stay for both the patient and family.
Our first steps in evaluating each patient are to establish concrete goals and aim for an appropriate date to return home. We add to the rehab process each day, incorporating roles of family members, home modification needs, and education. Staff members teach the family how to assist with specific therapeutic activities. In this ongoing process, family members develop skills to help during hospital treatment and after discharge.
What is a Rehabilitation program?
Under your doctor's direction, rehabilitation specialists come together to provide a treatment program specifically suited to your needs. Physicians who specialize in rehabilitation are called physiatrists. The number of services you receive will depend on your needs.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Team
Physiatrist
The Physiatrist is a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The Physiatrist leads the Rehab team and oversees your Rehab program to maximize your progress. The Genesys Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit staff physiatrists are: Dara Headrick, DO; Richard Kovan, MD; and Carlos Padilla, MD. Your Primary Care Physician will manage your medical needs while you are on the unit.
Care Coordinator / Social Worker
A Care Coordinator and/or Social Worker will work with you, your family, and community agencies to help solve problems that come with changes in your abilities and the need for medical care and equipment. This may include providing you with information, making referrals and arranging for continuing care after you leave the rehab unit. The Care Coordinator and / or Social Worker will discuss with you and your family your disability, your treatment goals, and your discharge plans.
Rehabilitation Nurses
Rehabilitation Nurses will care for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their role is to encourage self-care; personal hygiene; assist you to use the skills learned in therapy; and to teach and encourage healthy lifestyle adjustment and techniques in preparation for your independence after discharge.
Physical Therapists
Physical Therapists will work with you to improve your ability to walk, get in and out of bed, improve your balance and increase your strength. Their treatment focuses on exercise, balance activities and walking. The Physical Therapist will help determine your equipment needs and will work with you on ordering and using this new equipment to maximize your mobility.
Occupational Therapists
Occupational Therapists will help you maximize your independence in activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, grooming and feeding as well as homemaking, work, and leisure activities as appropriate. The OT will help determine equipment needs in your bathroom and will work with you on ordering and using this equipment.
Speech-Language Pathologists
Speech-Language Pathologists help you improve your communication skills, such as speaking, following directions, reading and writing. They may also address memory and problem solving. Another role of the Speech-Language Pathologist is to assist you if you have difficulty swallowing.
Because we individualize your care, involvement with the rehab team members may be different for each patient. Some patients may require additional services including the Clinical Psychologist, Neuropsychologist, Pastoral Care, Registered Dietician, Prothetist/Orthotist or Audiologist.
Our Credentials
