Hematology/Oncology Fellowship

Genesys Regional Medical Center Department of Medical Education is pleased to announce a new Fellowship Training Program in Hematology & Oncology accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and American College of Osteopathic Internists.

Candidates for the three year fellowship program must meet the following requirements for application:

Application to the Hematology & Oncology Fellowship through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
Diploma from an AOA-Accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine
Certificate of completion from an AOA approved Internal Medicine Residency or an ACGME Internal Medicine Residency for which AOA approval has been granted
Member in good standing in the AOA throughout residency.
Present a letter of recommendation from the Director of Medical Education at the institution where internship was completed or copy of Internship Certificate of completion
Present passing board scores
Present a curriculum vitae
Present a personal statement
Present three letters of reference, two being from practicing internists
Present medical school transcript
Must be appropriately licensed in the state of Michigan
Provide proof of current BLS and ACLS certification.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete a rotation with the program director. All visiting residents must complete the Visiting Resident Application On-Line and submit supporting documentation 60 days in advance of the rotation.

Genesys Hematology & Oncology Fellowship Program Description
The goal of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is the education of professionals in the care of patients with blood dyscrasias and malignancies. The Fellowship recognizes that there are many facets to the education of the competent Hematology/Oncologist. The individual must possess the knowledge necessary to diagnose and treat a wide variety of blood dyscrasias and malignancies. Just as important are the humanistic qualities necessary to apply knowledge to the care of patients suffering from potentially fatal/fatal disorders. The competent Hematologist/Oncologist must have a working knowledge of other disciplines such as Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Blood Banking, Surgical Oncology, Breast Surgery, Genetics, Infectious Disease, Critical Care Medicine, et cetera. The Hematologist/Oncologist should be able to function as a community resource on such subjects as Cancer Screening and Environmental Carcinogens. During the course of a 3 year Fellowship the individual must become familiar with the large volume of past literature in the fields of Hematology and Oncology and must also learn to critically evaluate the present body of literature. The Hematologist/Oncologist will become an educator to students, residents, and fellows, as well as lay groups. They will also develop the skills to continue the life-long process of education that will allow them to remain competent in an ever changing sub-specialty.

Clinical Rotations:
Fellows will maintain their own continuity clinics which will meet at least one half day per week.

1st Year:

4 months of Hospital Consult Services
4 months of Ambulatory Clinic
2 months of Pathology and Blood Banking
2 months of Research – where the fellow is expected to write a Research Protocol and submit it to a protocol review committee as well as the IRB. The research will then be conducted throughout the remainder of the Fellowship

2nd Year:

5 months of Hospital Consult Services
5 months of Ambulatory Clinic
1 month of Bone Marrow Transplant – to be done at an outside institution
1 month of Research

3rd Year:

4 months of Hospital Consults
4 months of Ambulatory Clinic
1 month of Bone Marrow Transplant
1 month of Research
1 month of Radiation Oncology
1 month of Surgical Oncology/Breast Surgery

Ambulatory Setting:
The Ambulatory Clinic Setting is in a 52,000 sq. ft. free standing Cancer Institute. The Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute is a joint venture between the Genesys Regional Medical Center and Hurley Medical Center and is located in Flint, Michigan. It contains both Radiation Oncology services and Medical Oncology services. The Second Floor contains the Medical Oncology services. The Floor is divided into the practices of Drs. Black, Weiner, Katato, and Adams, and the practice of Drs. Danish and Fahrner. The Floor contains space for both the clinic and chemotherapy infusion. It was designed to include 15 exam rooms for patient visits and 24 chemotherapy infusion stations. The Cancer Institute also includes a full service Chemotherapy Pharmacy with ventilated hoods for the mixing of chemotherapy. The Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute in located on a 5 acre site on the east side of Flint, and is surrounded by the campus of Mott Community College.

The program will follow the guidelines for residency training in accordance with the requirements of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Internists.
