    PEDIATRIC PALLATIVE CARE
The mission of the Genesys Home & Hospice Care PINWHEELS Program is to improve quality of life for infants and children living with serious illnesses and their families through supportive care.

    Our Goal
To maintain comfort, function and dignity according to your child’s developmental stage and your family’s unique needs and expectations. The focus is on the child instead of the disease so that physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs are addressed, and all gain the strength and ability to cope; thus improving your quality and quantity of time together.

    Who Qualifies
Any child living in our service area from birth to 18 years determined to living with a serious illness as determined by the child’s physician.

    Pinwheels is Supportive Care
Supportive care uses a team approach that includes your child and family as members. Nurses, social workers, therapists, clergy, and volunteers combine their skills to help your family provide living care to your loved one under the direction of your child’s physician.

Supportive care complements standard home care by enabling treatment of the whole person; offering friendship as well as medical care according to your child’s needs and wishes.

  • Nurses help the physician manage the disease process.
  • Social Workers assist with acceptance, coping , legal, and financial issues.
  • Home Health Aides assist with personal care.
  • Volunteers provide companionship and respite for caregivers.
  • Pastoral Workers help family clergy as needed with spiritual issues.
  • Therapists offer physical, occupational, speech, and nutrition therapy as needed.
  • The Physician Consultant oversees the team; attentive to the primary care physician’s plan of care.

    When we can help
There may be times your child’s illness limits usual activity; or pain and other symptoms are hard to control. We can help alleviate these symptoms, provide companionship, or extra help in the home. There also may be times your child or family members find it difficult to cope. We offer emotional support or help with any financial or legal matters. And if you ever need a kind soul to confide in, pray with, or offer any other spiritual assistance, we are there.

    Payment of Services
  • Children’s Special Health and most Private Insurances reimburse for skilled care. Genesys Grant funds are available for non- covered services.
  • Genesys Social Workers look into any other community resources that can provide financial & material relief; thereby reducing a family’s financial burden.
  • The Hospice benefit ensures that medical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs are met in cases where families feel a transition to hospice care is best

    PEDIATRIC HOSPICE
Genesys Hospice provides comprehensive, compassionate care for infants, children, and adolescents and their families in the advanced stages of progressive illness.

Our highly trained staff understand that children are not little adults. They have unique needs and different levels of cognitive awareness that require special skills to help them through their journey. Social Workers seasoned in the science of anticipatory grief assist parents, caregivers, and siblings that are a part of this journey. These Social Workers are invaluable to the family as they move caregivers towards acceptance and assist with funeral arrangements – a task much more difficult when dealing with the death of a child.

The Pediatric Hospice staff establishes a trusting relationship with the child and family that helps put everyone at ease while they fit into the family’s routine. Pediatric Hospice Nurses provide expert pain and symptom management under the direction of the child’s physician. Nurses Aides assist with personal care. Volunteers who have undergone additional pediatric training provide respite and companionship to patients and families, as well as transportation services. Spiritual Care assists as needed, working with the family’s clergy to make sure any spiritual issues are taken care of.

Therapists are available if needed to provide physical, occupational, speech, and nutrition services.
