Genesys Perinatal Diagnostics
Genesys Perinatologist June Murphy, DO, understands the sense of urgency many women experience after learning their pregnancy is considered high-risk.
"When patients have questions or concerns about their pregnancy, I make every effort to see them as soon as they want - often I will see them the same day," Dr. Murphy notes. "So much emotion is attached to pregnancy, and new moms have so many questions they want answered."
Time and compassion are added elements of care Dr. Murphy feels she brings to patients, along with her extensive knowledge and training in the field of maternal fetal medicine. Her own personal experiences as a new mom help provide her with even greater insights when it comes to understanding what this special group of moms-to-be are thinking and feeling, she finds.
The 36-year-old wife and mother of two children - a 3-year-old son and a 4-month-old daughter - Dr. Murphy is married to Charles Rollison, DO, an obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) on staff at Genesys. She and her husband recently joined the medical staff at Genesys - a place that "feels like home for us," she says.
After Dr. Murphy completed her residency in OB/GYN at Genesys in 1999 (where she met her husband), she traveled to Yale University's School of Medicine to complete a three-year fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine. From there, she worked at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill as a physician consultant on a pregnancy, infection and nutrition project. She continues to collaborate on this study of doppler images of uterine and umbilical arteries of 3,000 patients at risk for pre-term delivery. Before returning to Genesys, Dr. Murphy worked as a staff perinatologist in the Maternal Fetal Medicine department at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis,Indiana; and Indiana University Hospital.
When she learned of an opportunity to return to Genesys, she, and her husband, were thrilled. "The OB staff is very skilled and knowledgeable and great to work with," she finds. "I find the nursing care at Genesys is excellent, and the OB residents are not just good doctors, they are good people. I'm happy to be working with all of these very talented individuals. I feel patients at Genesys receive the best of both worlds - high quality care and a lot of individualized attention."
When talking about the patients referred to her, Dr. Murphy speaks with a real sense of concern, compassion and empathy.
"Patients with fetal anomalies need consultation in a comfortable, secure and private surrounding. I call patients after an amniocentesis to make sure they are doing well, and again as soon as I have the test results. I also provide my pager number to particularly anxious patients."
Dr. Murphy also makes a point to offer particularly upset patients a "back door" exit from her office. "When some patients are upset, they may not want to face a waiting room full of happy, pregnant women. Respecting this very personal, private and emotional time is important."
