New Information on the 2009 H1N1 Flu

HOW YOU CAN STAY HEALTHY
  • Stay informed. Check this web site regularly for updated information.
  • Get vaccinated. Get the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible and get the 2009 H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
  • Take everyday actions to stay healthy.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don't have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve or arm – not your hands.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water, and always after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
    • Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth to avoid illness.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home from work or school if you are sick and try to limit your contact with others to keep from spreading the illness.
    • Do not share objects that could spread the flu virus such as pencils, water bottles, utensils, cups, musical instruments, etc.
    • Find ways to stay healthy by eating nutritious food, getting exercise, getting plenty of rest, and not smoking.
    • Find ways to cope with stress and anxiety.
  • Watch for flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and possibly vomiting or diarrhea; stay home if these occur or seek medical attention if needed.
  • Get prepared. You should prepare as much as possible to remain at home if you are sick. Get prepared now with tissues, extra food, and over-the-counter medications (do not give children aspirin).
