Genesys Trauma Services

It’s a sad fact that injury is the number one cause of death and disability among children in the United States. Fortunately, most childhood injuries are preventable. The Injury Prevention program through Genesys Trauma Services is committed to decreasing injuries and trauma within our community. Emphasis is placed on education to ensure safety equipment is worn - and worn properly.

Our injury prevention specialists work in the community to educate local clinicians and families by distributing safety materials and demonstrating proper safety techniques. Genesys administers and supports a number of community initiatives designed to prevent childhood injury:

CPS (Child Passenger Safety) program
Did you know four out of five car seats are not installed properly? The CPS program educates the community on the dangers of not utilizing child passenger restraint systems, or not using them correctly. A certified CPS technician will inspect your car seat in its installation. Parents or guardians must then re-install the car seat in front of the technician to insure that the proper technique is used. Replacements on voided, expired, recalled or unsafe car seats also are offered. Car seat safety inspections take place three 3 times per month through Genesys Trauma Services, with help from Safe Kids and a generous grant from Genesys Health Foundation. Pre-registration is required. Check out the Genesys online calendar for upcoming dates.

Helmet Safety campaign
Did you know 50 percent of children (nationally) do not wear a helmet? And of the 50 percent that do, two out of three wear one that is not sized or adjusted properly. Helmets have shown a decrease in brain injuries from 45 to 88 percent. Trained helmet safety specialists work with parents, grandparents and children on the importance of wearing a bike helmet AND wearing it properly. Check out the Genesys online calendar for upcoming dates.

ThinkFirst
ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation is a national program that focuses on educating the community on prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries. This program was developed to target age-specific groups with programs developed specifically for high risk activities and risk factors for their age. Genesys Trauma Services visits the schools within our community in a classroom or assembly based atmosphere to increase knowledge on these activities and how to decrease injuries. If you would like more information on our affiliation with the national ThinkFirst program, please contact Zachary Landers at (810) 606-7284.
