Women and Children's Capital Campaign

A campaign to increase the level of care for babies at Genesys

Did you know that Genesee County ranks among the worst in the nation for infant morbidity and mortality, and that the numbers of high risk pregnancies and deliveries in this region continues to increase?

Approximately 60 percent of infant mortality deaths - within the first year of life - are related to premature births. In addition, more and more women are having babies at a later age, obesity rates in women continue to rise, and an increasing number of women of childbearing age have no health insurance. All of these factors contribute to a need for a higher level of obstetrical and nursery care. Genesys has a campaign to address this serious issue and to prevent our newborns from having to be transferred out for additional care.

Genesys Health Foundation launched a community-based, $2 million capital campaign to raise funds to increase the level of care for our Special Care Nursery and for high risk mothers and their babies. Through the success of this campaign, the Special Care Nursery in the Genesys Family Birthing Center will go from a Level IIA to a Level IIB, which means Genesys will have the capability to care for higher risk babies (those born at more than 32 weeks gestation and weighing more than 1500 grams, and/or those needing mechanical ventilation for up to 24 hours and those needing continuous airway pressure). With funds from this capital campaign, Genesys also will upgrade some of our Family Birthing Center rooms into family-friendly and comfortable birthing suites.
