Dermatology Residency

Medical Students: Unfortunately we do not accept medical students for a rotation due to the number of intern and resident rotators at our institution.

Visiting Interns/Residents: Visiting Interns/Residents must complete the Genesys Online Application for Visiting Interns/Residents and submit to GRMC Medical Education 60 days prior to the start of the rotation.

Dermatology Program

The Dermatology program is an Option 3 - This option represents a traditional rotating internship. Specialties (Dermatology being one) that have chosen this option prefer residents in the specialty to have completed a traditional rotating internship. Please apply for the Dermatology program through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)

The training program will adequately prepare the resident to pass the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology certifying examination and to practice dermatology.
The program director and trainers will help guide the resident in an orderly progression from the basic sciences and theories of dermatology to the complexities of diagnosis and treatment.

Each of the three years of residency training will be designed to improve on the trainee's knowledge and skills. At least 75% of the resident's time will involve direct patient care, including both outpatient dermatology, in private offices and on elective rotations, and inpatient dermatology, including hospital consultations and inpatient management of these cases. Didactics will complement this educational process. The study of the basic sciences of dermatology will include anatomy, physiology, histology, immunology, mycology, oncology, parasitology, pathology, virology, and photobiology of the skin.

Trainees will have access to a board certified dermatopathologist and will receive laboratory training. Residents will be trained to interpret histological slides and perform microscopic analysis of fungal scrapings, tzanc smears, immunofluorescence, and darkfield preparations.

Residents will obtain competence in the fields of contact allergy, cryotherapy, laser surgery, dermatologic surgery, dermatopathology, microbiology, photobiology, immunodermatology, and pharmacotherapy. Training will also be provided in the understanding of x-ray, ultraviolet, and laser radiation. Clinical teaching will include allergy and immunology, oncology, environmental disease, venereal disease, HIV infections, tropical disease, and dermatologic surgery. Residents will be encouraged to teach dermatology to other trainees, including medical students and staff, and incorporate osteopathic principles in their practice of dermatology.

The program will follow the guidelines for residency training in accordance with the requirements of the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.
