This is the award-winning letter sent to Amy Kaplan:
I would like to nominate Amy for the Daisy award not only because she has excellent nursing skills but because she has that fire in her heart to make a difference and the compassion for her patients shines through. The most recent example of this was an elderly gentleman that was admitted to her care whom suffered from periods of confusion. During his stay here at Genesys his wife was admitted to our MICU and passed away and because of his confused state he did not understand what had happend but he talked about his wife affectionately to Amy telling her how he wished that she were well. Amy listened to him intently giving him her time and attention. When the family requested a leave for the patient to be able to attend his wife's funeral Amy went to great lengths to prepare the elderly man the night before. She bathed him not with a bag bath but with soap and water so that he felt clean, she washed his hair, shaved him, and dressed him in clean clothes. She spent a great deal of time with this patient making sure that everything was in order so that when the family arrived they found their loved with a fresh appearance and ready for the day. Later that night after the funeral Amy came into work for the midnight shift and again cared for this man. Although he had been confused before he told Amy this time how his wife had died today and he let Amy comfort him. This is the type of nurse that deserves recognition not because she did something that she expected to recieve recognition for but because she did something that preserved some dignity for another human being and provided comfort in a time of need. This is what makes a nurse super human.
