This is the award-winning letter sent to Anthony Sherwood:
About 5 years ago, my daughter, Heather Palmer, was brought into your emergency room with injuries to her left arm due to a snow boarding accident. We went from thinking her arm was just dislocated to finding out that it was broken in 3 places and they were calling in a doctor for emergency surgery. That was a very terrifying experience for both of us and most of what happened that night is a blue; except for the exceptional care my daughter received by her nurse, Tony Sherwood. He not only paid special attention to the fears of a 15 year old, but he made sure I was okay as well, keeping me well informed and assuring me she would be ok.

Recently, we received a message that Heather was once again in the emergency room at Genesys. By the time my husband and I reached the hospital, we were both worked up because we were not sure what to expect. Heather was crying and when we talked with her by phone and all we knew was that she had been thrown from her horse and was having trouble breathing and couldn't put pressure on her leg. When we walked in and saw her, we were both very concerned. The emergency room was very busy that night and the doctor hadn't been in yet. Heather had to use the bathroom and the clear said she would get her nurse. When her nurse walked in, I recognized him immediately as the same nurse that made us feel so comfortable 5 years ago. It's hard to explain the calm feeling that came over me and once again, even as busy as they were; he gave us that same special treatment.

I think Genesys is extremely lucky to have someone like Tony on their team. A trip to the emergency room is something we all dread, whether it is for a family member, friend, or ourselves; the fear of not knowing what is wrong, the cries of fear and pain you hear around you are never easy to deal with. Although we were happy with the overall treatment that our daughter received from the doctors to the girl that came and got her for x-rays, it was the way Tony did his job in such a friendly, compassionate, caring way that will keep us coming back to Genesys. He truly is an asset to his profession.
