DAISY Awards
Name: Paula Edgerton

Department: NTICU

Recipient: October of 2005

Nominated by: Employee - Beth Merlo

This is the award-winning letter sent to Paula Edgerton:
I received a phone call from Patti Donoho RN, Administrative Director on
September 22nd at 2:45pm. She asked if a NTICU RN was available to go to 4 South to assist with a patient recently post -op, now having complications with paralysis. The patient was in emergent need to be transferred via ambulance to a facility on Ballenger Hwy for a stat MRI. SWAT was busy with another patient and unable to assist with this transport. It was felt an ACLS nurse should accompany the patient in case his condition changed, which would require an ICU nurse.

I made one phone call to NTICU, spoke with Paula Edgerton RN, who was getting off work in just moments. I explained the situation to her. Without hesitation, she responded “of course…. I’ll go”.

She reported off to a peer and went to 4 South within minutes. Once there, she observed the patient to be nervous and anxious about what should have been a simple cervical procedure, he was now unable to move or feel his extremities from his chest down. With calming words and a gently touch, Paula comforted this patient. Being a large patient, he had difficulty resting on the bed/stretcher. Paula sat as close to the patient as possible thereby allowing him to stretch his arms onto her lap. Together they traveled across town to MRI.

Paula invested 4 hours, above and beyond her already busy day caring for patients in the NTICU to serve this customer. Her family plans were put on hold, she didn’t punch out at the expected 3:15pm time and she jumped right into another assignment.

This…….. is outstanding nursing care. This………. is nursing excellence. This…….. is typical nursing practice for Paula Edgerton. I believe with all my heart that Paula deserves to be recognized and receive the Daisy Award for her outstanding nursing care. Her selfless service to this customer granted this patient safe passage of transport to a procedure as well as having provided him emotional support and encouragement during this crisis. I am so proud that Paula is a part of this nursing team at GRMC. She is a role model to remind us …. This isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. Thank you for your service.
Respectfully,

Beth Merlo
