This is the award-winning letter sent to PACU II:
Marilyn Arnold, Donna Bondy, Sandy Swartwood, Latressa Gordon, Kathy Ferris, and Kelli Gregory:
I would like to submit the names of some of my 3rd Floor PACU II staff for a Daisy Award for the excellent Nursing care that they delivered this AM to one of our surgical patients, Lorraine Weiler. Mrs. Weiler, 76, was scheduled for a Total Hip this AM at 7:30AM. While the nurse, Marilyn Arnold, was getting her ready, she complained of feeling "warm". Marilyn asked if there were any other symptoms, which the patient denied. Feeling her skin, and noticing that she was clammy, she and another nurse, Donna Bondy, hooked up the EKG, B/P, and O2 Sat monitors. They saw significant ST elevation and hypotension and initiated the chest pain protocol. At that time other nurses, Sandy Swartwood, Latressa Gordon, Kathy Ferris, and Kelli Gregory came in to help. The patient did then admit to some back pain and started having nausea and mottling. They worked as a Team to provide all the appropriate notifications to Anesthesia and the Cardiologist on site, as well as the appropriate nursing interventions, and the patient was transported to the Cath Lab at the time she should have gone to the OR. The patient had a CABG in the past and Cardiac stent placement. At this time, the patient is still in the Cath Lab, and I am not sure of the status, but the rapid recognition and response by this Team certainly had a positive impact upon what I hope is a good outcome for this wife and mother. |
