This is the award-winning letter sent to 4 South:
I am 37 years old. On the 25th of March, 2008 my life changed forever. I am a preacher of the gospel. As it was, on said day, I was traveling (along with my wife and two close friends) from the Detroit area to Swartz Creek to teach a Bible class. As the 4 of us were heading north on US 23, it became apparent that there was a problem with the car I was driving. I pulled over to address the issue. I exited the vehicle. Moments later I was side-swiped by a tractor-trailer traveling at a furious pace. As I was struck, I felt intense vibrations quake through my body. The sensation ceased moments later as I landed close to 15-feet away from the point of impact. I tried to stand but was unable to do so.

As I would later learn, I had sustained injuries to the entire lower right side of my body. With the main artery in my leg gushing blood, I was quite literally, bleeding to death on the side of life's highway. Amazingly, an off duty trauma nurse saw me fading away and applied pressure to the artery in order to slow the bleeding. I am forever grateful for her willingness to be a "Good Samaritan."

After having been rushed to the Emergency Room at your hospital, I was sedated by the medical personnel on duty and a lengthy surgery was performed to save me. My entire lower right side had to be patched together. Sadly, because of the massive amount of trauma I had endured, an amputation was deemed necessary on my right leg. I know that this was not an easy decision, albeit a compulsory one made by the doctor.

I was in your hospital for a total of 53 days. The care I received was superb. The support my family received was of the best sort. I am thankful you employ such dedicated and talented folks. The nurses were there for me in the darkest hours during that long period of recovery. They genuinely care about people. They are to be commended highly. I am so thankful for each of them. I am forever indebted to your staff!
