This is the award-winning letter sent to 2 South:
I have been thinking for several days about the compassionate care that the 2 South Staff have given to Maurice Wagner during his long (157+ days) stay at Genesys. I'm not sure how long he was on 2 South, but a considerable amount of those days. Then this morning I heard that Maurice had considerable symtoms early on 3rds shift, was transferred to MICU, coded and died.
I would like to commend the 2 South staff for the care that they gave "Mo". He had become more than just a patient to them. He had become a very complicated nursing care case who touched their hearts. He irritated them with his demands, his frequency of call lights, & hischanging moods, but they always dealt with him with respect and dignity while setting limits. He had very few visitors, so the staff filled his social needs and were there for him, even holding his hand as he faced impending death. His nursing care was complicated by his size, his lupus, his fistula , his skin breakdown and refusals to move, turn, or get out of bed which required heavy assistance. I think it is commendable that he was hospitalized for more than 140 days before any sign of skin breakdown appeared.
I know that 2 South is not the only staff who worked with Maurice off and on throughout this long stay and would like to remain sensitive to the others as he transferred in and out of the ICU's, the social work/discharge planning staff, etc. I would like to recommmend that we recognize the 2 South Staff with a daisy award for their excellence and stay sensitive to them in this time of loss.
